Many believe that food choices can contribute to symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, also known as ADHD. Avoiding certain types of foods, and carefully put them back into your diet, you can determine if your child has a food allergy that contributes to her ADHD symptoms. Eating a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet, with fruits and vegetables, can also help a child suffering from ADHD
Things to avoid
When you start your child on an ADHD diet, cutting out several types of foods entirely in the first few weeks to determine if he has a sensitivity or allergy to any of the foods he eats. All dairy products should be avoided, as well as sugar in all forms, eggs, caffeine and wheat. Food additives, including food coloring, can also cause ADHD symptoms and should be avoided.
What to eat
Once the first weeks have passed, begin to add foods in your child’s diet, one at a time. Wait a few days between food and keep track of any symptoms that occur when a food is added back into her diet. If you notice any unusual behavior or physical symptoms, remove the food from the diet her again. Repeat this until you have found foods she is sensitive to, and avoid answering her those foods as much as possible.
Protein Vs. carbohydrate
Children with ADHD should avoid cereal-based breakfasts, due to their increased requirement of protein and complex carbohydrates. Most meals should be balanced between protein and complex carbohydrates, which are found in vegetables and whole grains. If your child must eat cereal, make sure he eats little protein, too, such as a protein shake, a slice of ham or some bacon. Until you’re sure he did not have a wheat allergy, should some grain be rice-based.
fruits Vegetables
Serve your child fruits and vegetables that have been thoroughly washed to remove any pesticide or chemical residues, to ensure she is eating a chemical free diet. Try several different types of fruits until you find what she likes. Vegetables can be shredded or pureed and added to ground beef when making hamburgers or other favorite foods.
