Fasting for nutrition, healing and detoxification have been around for a long time. Historically it has been common to heal disease. Today in the western world, it is common to detoxify the digestive tract. Fasting works by the body’s enzymes to enter the bloodstream instead of sitting in the stomach or intestine. The enzymes dissolve, any toxins in the blood, thus cleansing the blood. If you are new to fasting a three day fasting is a good idea. As with any rapidly always check with your doctor first to make sure you are in good enough health to be able to quickly.

A few days before a juice fast you should start removing components in your diet. Slowly eliminate parts of the diet will gently ease the body into a fast. If you do not enter slowly into a fast you can experience severe cramping, nausea and constipation or diarrhea. You do not need to shock your system, you’ll ease into the cleansing process. Start by removing excess sugar as soda, coffee, snacks, breads and cereals. Take a day or two to eliminate these and maintain a fruit and vegetable diet for one or two days. After a day or two at a fruit and vegetable diet eliminate fruit. Remember when you eliminate fruit you eliminate a lot of water. Make sure you drink eight glasses of water throughout this process. The water will keep you hydrated and help to purify you.
Under fast you will just be drinking juice. During this time it is important to choose the right juice. Vegetable juice is highly recommended. Try diluting your juice with filtered water. A 50/50 juice / water mixture is recommended. Ideally, you will have access to a juicer and could juice your own vegetables. Fear not but if you do not. You can buy organic vegetables in the health food section of most grocery stores. The best juice drinks are carrot, beets, zucchini squash, celery, lettuce, sprouts and cabbage. Ideally, you want to drink four eight-ounce glasses of juice a day. You will also notice that you will start urinating more and more bowl movements that can increase fluid in your diet and begin to detoxify. Make sure you are able to rest often, and do not participate in strenuous activity. This is a time to tax your body.
After three days of strictly drink juice you can begin to get out of the fast. Like into fast you want to do this slowly so you do not shock your system. The body has not had solid food for three days. If you do not ease back to solid foods you risk indigestion again. Slowly going out quickly so you wrote it down, but in reverse. East vegetables for a day, introduce fruit with vegetables for a day and light back to bread, meat and grains.
