Alternative Sugar

Alternative sugar can sweeten our food and drink, helps to elevate our moods, without any of the drawbacks of sugar (sucrose). . Examples of healthy alternative sugar is polyalcohol sugar, stevia, raw honey and agave. These replace sugar is easier for the body to digest and does not trigger insulin reactions. With the exception of raw honey, these alternative sugars are also lower in calories than sugar.

Polyalcohol Sugar
Polyalcohol sugar as sorbitol, mannitol has, malitol and xylitol been used by diabetics for years as alternative sugar. Sorbitol occurs naturally in berries, grapes, plums, and pears. Mannitol is in marine algae and fresh mushrooms, while malitol is found in starch of corn. Xylitol is derived from birch wood pulp. All are produced commercially from dextrose.

Raw, untreated honey a healthy alternative to refined sugar. It is digested easier than sugar, and are rich in amino acids, enzymes, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, even though it is higher in carbohydrates than sugar.

In addition to fructose and glucose, it comprises about 10 percent inulin which helps control blood sugar.

Agave is sometimes called “honey water” and is light in color and flavor. Sweeter than honey, it has a very low glycemic index. For this reason and because of inulin it contains, not agave does not raise blood sugar levels. Agave is a good alternative sugar for diabetics and all sensitive to sugar.
