What you eat plays a significant role in dictating your mood. You’ve probably experienced feel better or worse after eating certain foods, but you may not have known that there is a direct link between the food you eat and your overall mood
Importance
The brain uses neurotransmitters such as serotonin, endorphins and dopamine to send messages to your body. The body creates these neurotransmitters from the various nutrients in the food you eat. Without enough of the right foods to provide these nutrients, your brain can not make the neurotransmitters it needs and you become anxious, depressed, tired and irritable.
Prevention / Solution
To keep your mood elevated through diet, be sure to consume monounsaturated fats, complex carbohydrates and polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids throughout the day. Each of these is known to keep depression and anxiety at bay. Also include some foods that contain tryptophan, which helps you feel calmer. Drink enough water to accommodate your height, weight and activity level. Do not skip meals. In fact, spreading food intake over several small meals or three meals and two or three snacks keeps your blood sugar elevated. This will prevent crashes and fatigue and irritability that comes with it.
