public health advocacy is the process of promoting education, processes and legislation that are designed to improve the overall health of people living within a defined geographic location. process of advocacy also involves identifying potential threats to the health of people living in the community and alert others to the seriousness of these threats. many different people can work in some capacity to support this work, from volunteers to healthcare professionals and lawmakers.
the goal of most organized public health programs advocacy work is twofold. Firstly, the applicant organization to present the public with accurate and current information about a particular health condition or risk. This includes assisting people who suffer with the condition in securing medical care, promote research that will help to minimize the impact of health risks and alert the public to the situations in society that can increase their chances of spreading health problem.
Second, public health advocacy goes behind education to promote action. This often takes the form of encouraging the implementation of laws and standards that will pave the way for better health conditions for all people in society. From this perspective, the role of a public health advocate not only to point out the problem, but also to promote solutions
just about anyone can participate in the process of public health advocacy at any level. volunteers can support local nonprofits that focus on one or more health problems with donations of time and money. people who want to make public health a career can be inspectors or find work with educators providing accurate data on various public health threats. there is also the possibility of working for a lawyer program full-time, possibly serving as a lobbyist focused on urging lawmakers to pass legislation that will improve health conditions for the public.
public health advocacy plays an important role in the establishment of public health policy, including general health policy. by educating the public, identify threats to health citizens in general, and promoting measures to minimize or eliminate these threats, ending lawyer with other public health professionals in making the quality of life much higher for some people than it would be otherwise.
