Weight loss occurs when the body is in a negative energy balance. In other words, weight loss occurs when the energy used is greater than the amount of energy (food) consumed.

A negative energy balance draws stored energy (fat) from the stored fat tissue on the body, resulting in fat is broken down to amino acids, and then burned as a fuel, a process which results in weight loss.
Consideration
The greater the gap that exists between the amount of energy burned by the body and how much energy (food) consumed on a daily basis, going faster weight loss for an individual. A major daily negative energy balance results in faster overall weight loss.

Weight loss in overweight or obese individuals resulting in increased blood glucose and insulin profiles, reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes, and reduced stress being placed on the major weight-bearing joints of the body.

Body weight and stored fat cells (fat) tissue belongs to the whole body. As weight loss occurs, the stored fat is drawn from the body, not only from localized areas that may contain a higher proportion of stored fat than other areas. Thus total weight loss that stored energy reserves are burned from all areas of the body.
