Importance
With the fast, hectic lifestyles that define modern society, people consume large amounts of anti-anxiety medications, energy supplements, sleep medications, and various other compounds designed to increase productivity and reduce stress. Unfortunately, many of these supplements are addictive and reduce the effect longer they are taken. In addition, these grants have horrible side effects. For example, caffeine a momentary energy boost, but also increases anxiety, stress and make sleep difficult. L-Theanine is now explored as an alternative to other more addictive ways to reduce stress and increase alertness.

L-Theanine has recently exploded in popularity across the United States, is added to a variety of on-the-go type of snack food and sports drinks, as well as being sold in supplement form. This psychoactive amino acid can be taken at any time by a person. The effects usually begin within about 30 minutes and lasts for eight to ten hours. Importantly, reducing L-Theanine stress without causing drowsiness, a function so common among relaxing agents.
History
The soothing-but-focused benefits of green tea have been known for centuries but it was only in the last century, with increasing focus on chemistry and exploitation, such as L-Theanine was isolated. The amino acid was first identified in 1949 by Sakato as part of tea leaves (it accounts for approximately 1-2% of the dry weight of the leaves), and first produced in the early 1960s by Taiyo International. It was approved as a food additive in Japan in 1964, but has only recently begun to draw attention from the U. S. market.
Consideration
If you are looking to take supplementary L-Theanine, be warned that a recent study found that the supplements marketed as “pure” L-Theanine, just Suntheanine was actually almost pure, while the other mostly contained around half D-Theanine (Armstrong 2005), a related but inactive (and potentially counteractive) compound. Otherwise there is minimal cautioning about L-Theanine. There is no known lethal dose, and there are no known adverse effects.
Benefits
Alongside its stress-busting effects, L-Theanine has been shown to increase the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system, increases immunity, lower blood pressure, increases concentrative capacity and learning ability, improve memory, enhance sleep and generally reduce agitation or nervousness. These are largely attributed to the increasing levels of the neurotransmitter GABA, although it also seems to increase dopamine and serotonin possibly also. L-Theanine has also been shown to have a significant effect on PMS symptoms, and it begins to be used as an ADD and ADHD treatment. In addition, L-Theanine shows promise in cancer therapy since the compound appears to help anti-tumor agents accumulate in cancer cells, while at the same time providing protection for the non-cancerous tissue exposed by treatment.
